The Sixth Dragon

- Story of Dragon Lord Tiamat -

With the passage of time, the fact that Tiamat was not destined to become a Dragon Lord is known only to a few.

In the beginning, there were five Dragon Lords: Fregion, Meslamtaeda, Ereshkigal, Beritra, and Apsu.

Apsu was in many aspects different from Tiamat.

While Tiamat was a murderous lord of blood and fury who enjoyed nothing more than killing, Apsu was a master tactician and strategist. His magnanimity created many devoted admirers among the Balaur.

His extraordinary strategies in battle against the Daevas and Empyrean Lords, and his wide public support, enabled Apsu to take the throne as the fifth Dragon Lord.

After Apsu's ascension, Fregion declared there would be no more Dragon Lords, making Apsu the fifth and final Dragon Lord.

This declaration denied Tiamat the possibility of becoming a Dragon Lord.

She may have had greater capabilities and ambitions, but because of Fregion's declaration, her chance of becoming a Dragon Lord was impossible.

Adrift and alone, Tiamat decided to serve under Apsu after some time.

It is not clear whether Tiamat planned on taking Apsu's place as a Dragon Lord when she first joined his legion.

One thing, however, was certain: by proving herself, Tiamat won Apsu's trust in a short period of time and became his right-hand man.

During that time, Tiamat rarely lost her temper or reveled in killing. She hid her true nature in order to achieve her ultimate goal.

Tiamat started off as captain of a small strike force legion soon after joining Apsu's legion.

Tiamat carried out Apsu's strategy faithfully and led her men to victory in all her battles.
Tiamat soon took charge of a bigger legion and eventually entered the Protectorate Apsu.

For a while, Tiamat hardly stood out at the Protectorate.

In retrospect, it seems Tiamat intentionally kept a low profile at the Protectorate to get a feel for the situation and expand her influence.
After winning the loyalty of those around her, Tiamat's abilities once again were on display, and she became Apsu's Bodyguard Captain.

Apsu may have trusted his Bodyguard Captain, but Tiamat was the one who killed him.

There are many accounts discussing how Tiamat killed Apsu, but it's been widely claimed she plunged a magical dagger in the neck of a sleeping Apsu.

Another story says Tiamat opened Apsu's chest, took out his heart, and threw it in the crater of a volcano that has continued to erupt for a thousand years.

There is also another story that Tiamat, together with her followers from the Protectorate, attacked and killed Apsu.

One thing these stories have in common is that Apsu trusted his Bodyguard captain, only to be attacked by Tiamat while relaxing.

After murdering Apsu, Tiamat hid that fact. Instead, she brought the Protectorate Apsu and the Legions of the Brigade Generals together.

She then informed them of Apsu's death and announced that she would become the new Dragon Lord.

Many of them were opposed, naturally, but they were swiftly overpowered by Tiamat and her followers.

Those opposed were killed on sight.

With everything happening all at once, chaos ensued. But Tiamat's supporters began championing the idea of Tiamat as the next Dragon Lord and the atmosphere began to shift.

Some quick-witted generals quickly sided with them, while others who were no fans of Tiamat had to reluctantly acknowledge the tide had turned.

After taking control of Apsu's forces, Tiamat notified the other Dragon Lords of what had happened.

As expected, there was huge backlash. Ereshkigal, a cruel punisher and keeper of the order, was particularly infuriated. She condemned Tiamat for assassinating the very Dragon Lord she served. She would not accept someone who profited off the event by becoming a Dragon Lord.

As news quickly spread, forces rallied against Tiamat not only in Ereshkigal's territory but also in many other regions.

However, Fregion's official recognition of Tiamat as a Dragon Lord suppressed all opposition and resistance.

Despite widespread opposition, no one knows why Fregion recognized Tiamat as a Dragon Lord. The most likely explanation was to prevent the Balaur from being torn apart by internal strife as war escalated with the Empyrean Lords.

Fregion recognized Tiamat as a Dragon Lord but made it clear that no more assassination would be tolerated. He declared anyone who wanted to be a Dragon Lord should rally his forces, declare war, and fight fairly.

Fregion's proclamation may have given Tiamat official recognition as a Dragon Lord, but she did not have the public's support.

To detract from public criticism and prove herself, Tiamat fiercely fought in battles, which in turn gave her a reputation of enjoying blood, massacre, and destruction.

Being known as the Dragon Lord Assassin, however, became a weak spot for Tiamat. It drew more challengers to her than to the other Dragon Lords. Raksha and Stormwing may have been the strongest challengers, but Tiamat defeated them easily.

Nevertheless, Tiamat is still the first to be challenged by anyone who wants to become a Dragon Lord.
