The expanded weapons have +4 meters of reach added to their basic reach. Also the effective distance of some skills gets extended by +4 meters too.
Basically expanded weapons are most useful in PvP. They help you to keep your melee enemy at distance and avoid being hit at the same time. For a melee character in PvP it's always better to have a less powerful expanded weapon with longer reach, then common but more powerful one.
