The area is surrounded by a magic ward of apparent Danuar origin. This is the source of the Rotron's mutations, I'm sure of it.

Take this Magic Ward Removal Scroll with you and investigate the Hildanon's Warding Sphere surrounding the tree. Dispel it if you can.
