So see in the skills window (K) whether you have learned a new skill when you reach the next level. Combat is the best way to test your ability. That's a given. In this case, combat against a real opponent is always preferable to solely training. When you improve your skills and develop yourself, you automatically learn new skills. You should therefore open your skills window (K) when you reach the next level and put your new skills to good use.
