Chapter 8: The Elyos Daevas' Fight to Survive in Times of Doubt

To the Doubting Elyos Daevas

We are still being attacked by Asmodians today. Everyday life in Reshanta is defined by constant, bloody battles. It's only natural that you will gradually begin to doubt the justification for this endless cycle of death and resurrection.

"Why do we have to keep fighting the Asmodians?"

"Wouldn't we be happier as mortals?"

You received the answers to these questions long ago in the Empyrean Crucible.

The continued existence of Elysea depends on us destroying the remaining part of Aion's Tower in Asmodae. If we don't succeed, the Aether will continue to disappear through the rift in the Tower.

Losing sight of the real goal in the wake of the battle is only natural. However, it is essential that we keep winning battles, conquering fortresses and successfully defend them.

Some only fight the Asmodians because of a deep-seated dislike.

It's also because of her appearance, with these claw-like fingers and toes, the black wings and the mane on her back.

They don't resemble either the humans or the Daevas whom Aion created at the beginning. That is why some believe that Aion chose us and damned them.

Although Daevas cannot die in the physical sense, the war leaves them scarred. Whenever a Daeva suffers pain or wakes up near an Obelisk, that Daeva's soul suffers damage, too. This in turn affects that Daeva's convictions.

So endless war gradually becomes commonplace and leaves Daevas in doubt. That's why a Daeva needs more motivation than just pretty words. Above all, a Daeva needs a worthwhile reason to fight.

Because I, Eter, felt these same doubts about the endless war long ago, I want to give you some advice.

You must find your own reason for this war.

Looking back, there is no doubt that the Asmodians caused the Cataclysm by provoking the Balaur. They received their just punishment for their actions in the name of the five Empyrean Lords. This also means that we Elyos are destined to rule over all Atreia.

Chapter 1: Ancient Atreia

Almighty Aion create Atreia many thousands of years ago. Aion thus gave us a wonderful world filled with light, warmth and prosperity.

Compared to the two halves of the world as they stand today, this world was flawless, almost perfect. All beings lived together in peace.

In addition to humans, the Balaur and other Sapiens also lived on Atreia. It may be difficult for us to admit this today, but the Balaur were the strongest faction at that time.

However, humans differed from them in one crucial point. It was her belief in Aion. They lived in the glory of Aion's light, thus their faith remained unwavering.

While the Balaur and the other Sapiens only worked towards their own survival, the humans built temples and praised Aion in their songs. They lived their lives just as Aion expected.

The countless ruined temples, like the ones in Verteron, still bear witness to their devoted lives.

Chapter 2: The Emergence of the Dragon Lords

Steeped in their thirst for blood and their hunger for power, the Drakan of the Balaur have always lacked scruples. Because they were physically far superior to humans and other Sapiens and because they had better weapons, they were able to subjugate the other races. But not even this could still their hunger for power.

They started fighting each other. Each of them wanted to be better and to rule the other Balaur.

In order to dominate the other Balaur, the Drakan wanted to further increase their physical and mental abilities.

They were convinced that only someone who possessed great strength and even greater intelligence could rule over their people. Finally, some of the Drakan ascended. Gradually, more and more Drakan became Dragons.

The Dragons differed greatly from the Drakan. They had wings and were much larger. Their skills had changed significantly.

This was demonstrated in particular by five Dragons, who were eventually able to defeat the remaining Dragons with their extraordinary skills and thus became the Dragon Lords.

Although they now enjoyed extraordinary skills and enormous power, their greed knew no end.

After some time, they even claimed Aion's power for themselves.

They wanted to absorb Aion's infinite power and rule over all Atreia.

Chapter 3: The Fight Against the Balaur

The people wanted to fight the Balaur in order to protect Aion, but they simply weren't strong enough.

Before they could utter a cry, they fell to the sharp claws of the Drakan, and thanks to the gruesome magic of the Dragon Lords, whole cities disappeared in the Sea of Flames.

But Aion did not abandon his people. He sent twelve Empyrean Lords to fight the Dragon Lords in his stead. He also created an Aetheric Field intended to protect the people from the Balaur, as the Balaur could not enter it.

The people inside this field were safe, but they could not escape the war.

The 12 Empyrean Lords blessed some people so they could take a stand against the Balaur. These blessed people grew wings and could henceforth use the power of the Aether to fight the Drakan.

They called these people who were blessed by the twelve Empyrean Lords Daevas. They were trained so that they could join the war as an army.

The people in the Aetheric Field served Aion and the twelve Empyrean Lords, while the Daevas fought the Balaur alongside the Lords.

Because the Daevas could not age or die, they were never relieved of the weight resting on their shoulders.

The Daevas were supposed to get their lives back on the day the Balaur were finally destroyed. But the Balaur numbered many and the Dragon Lords were powerful. It seemed that this dream would never come true.

The war never changed, not even after a thousand years.

Only the people inside the Aetheric Field were still safe, while the Balaur were still trying to overthrow Aion and claim his power for themselves.

Some of the Empyrean Lords realised that they had to find another way.

Chapter 4: A Peace Treaty Proposal to the Balaur

Lord Israphel realised that the war, which had dragged on for well over a thousand years, was not benefiting either side. He also believed that nothing would change in the next thousand years.

Although Daevas could not age or die, it was possible to destroy them. Looking back at the countless victims who fell prey to the war, the Lord came to the conclusion that the humans and Daevas desperately needed peace.

The history books contain detailed descriptions of the moment when Lord Israphel, who hated the Dragon Lords more than anyone else, made this proposal.

The remaining eleven Lords stared at him, stunned and bewildered. Finally Lord Azphel's cry broke the silence.

"Have you lost your mind? How dare you suggest making peace with the Balaur? The souls of the Daevas who risked their lives in the fight against the Balaur for the last thousand years are watching us, and you're suggesting in all seriousness that we should spare these heretics, who do not recognize Aion's holiness?"

But Lord Israphel remained unimpressed by Azphel's words.

"Remember the real reason for this war! We never wanted to erase the Balaur. It has only ever been about protecting Aion. Should we continue the war for another thousand years and see even more Daevas die until no one who is loyal to Aion is left standing? Would you be happy then?"

Israphel's eloquence persuaded Lady Siel. As Protectors of the tower, she and Israphel were leaders of the Empyrean Lords, and the other ten Lords had to abide by their decisions.

People were skeptical about whether a peace treaty with the Balaur was possible, but they harboured the hope that this long war would finally come to an end.

Chapter 5: The Cataclysm

The day of the peace treaty was determined. All preparations were completed several days in advance of the event.

When the Balaur approached the meeting place, Lady Siel and Lord Israphel disabled the Aetheric Field so they could enter. As agreed, the Dragon Lords came unarmed.

Up till now everything had gone smoothly.

But a cold darkness hung over us that day. Looking at Lord Azphel and his followers, it was easy to see that they saw this treaty as an insult.

Suddenly, Lord Azphel leaped forward and struck down Dragon Lord Beritra.

Then chaos broke out.

Furious, Fregion, the leader of the Balaur Lords, spread his arms wide. A bright ray of light flashed out, almost blinding those nearby, followed by a petrifying roar.

What happened next is hard to believe, but Aion's Tower gradually broke into two pieces.

Meslamtaeda, Ereshkigal and the other Balaur Lords attacked the twelve Empyrean Lords and the Daevas. But this battle only lasted briefly.

Because after Aion's Tower cracked, the Aetheric flow turned into a horrendous vortex.

In the midst of this chaos, Lady Siel and Lord Israphel used all of their powers to reactivate the Aetheric Field and to bring the Daevas in the northern and southern halves of Atreia to safety.

Chapter 6: The New World and Sanctum

Only later did we learn that the humans and the Daevas who landed in the southern part of Atreia were luckier than those who landed in the north.

Even though Aion's light had weakened, the environment was able to continue its existence thanks to the light that penetrated from outside.

But the Cataclysm destroyed several towns, and some even completely disappeared from the Earth's surface.

In the midst of all this chaos, Lady Ariel and the other four Empyrean Lords encouraged humans and Daevas alike to rebuild Atreia in its ancient splendour.

Gradually, they built villages and towns. They also planted crops that were better adapted to the new environment.

Even though they never completely forgot the pain, the people were gradually able to move beyond the tragedy of the Cataclysm.

I was born during this time. During the age after the Cataclysm in which everything was new and had to be rebuilt.

For me, there have always been only five Empyrean Lords and one tower of Aion, which had lost its light. I only knew the tower and Atreia as entities that had been torn apart, so the stories were no more than legends for me.

But I did watch one development enthusiastically. Once Atreia was secure once more, Lady Ariel ordered the construction of a new capital city.

When the work was finished, many people came together. Lady Ariel and the other Lords joined them and were very grateful to the people and Daevas who built Sanctum.

She spoke of a historic moment for this new Atreia.

Raising their arms, Lady Ariel and the other Lords slowly ascended into the sky above Sanctum. When they reached the highest point, the city was filled with a glowing aura, and since then it has radiated this wonderful light.

Chapter 7: Danger in the Abyss

We praised Aion's providence when we discovered the Abyss. We expected a place full of resources and Aether.

But now I see the Abyss as more of a curse.

When we made our way through the fragments of the tower in order to explore the Abyss, we were filled with hope.

Many Daevas vanished in the course of these explorations, but we believed this was the unavoidable sacrifice for discovering new territories.

But then we witnessed the events surrounding Deltras and the Storm Legion.

I will relate the incident as it was told to me by one of the survivors of the Storm Legion.

We travelled through the Abyss to a strange place and soon found out that it was the northern part of Ancient Atreia. It had changed into a dark, desolate place. Even the people there looked different.

Deltras was trying to find a way to return home when he suddenly encountered Lord Zikel.

Lord Zikel told him that he only let Deltras return if he would curse Lord Nezekan. Instead, Deltras cursed Zikel. By trying to defend the pride of the Elyos, Deltras perished at Zikel's hands.

Many of his men were killed alongside him, but some managed to escape. Only very few managed to return to Elysea.

Finding out that the other half of Atreia existed on the other side of the Abyss was a huge shock to us. But an even bigger shock was to follow.

While exploring the Abyss, Lord Vaizel met an Artefact Protector who entrusted him with the secret of the Abyss.

The Abyss was a space in another dimension, created by the Aether in the remaining fragments of Aion's Tower. It continues to consume Aether.

This meant that, ultimately, Atreia itself will fall if one of the two halves of Aion's Tower is not completely destroyed.

Chapter 8: The struggle to survive

After Lord Vaizel returned, the war against the Asmodians was no longer fuelled by revenge.

Now the Elyos and Elysea fought for their survival.

We built fortresses near the tower fragments as well as on the large floating islands in the Abyss.

But we were not the only ones who took these precautions. I don't know how they managed it, but the Asmodian also obtained this information, and they began building fortresses, too.

After that, the real war to destroy the other half of the Tower broke out in the Abyss.

But that's not all.

The Balaur, whom we had forgotten long ago, reappeared in the Abyss. Our old enemy, whom we already faced in battle over a thousand years ago, had returned.

The Balaur had changed, too, just like the Asmodians. They threw themselves into battle, attacking Elyos and Asmodians alike.

The fighting was more chaotic than ever.

Atreia is surrounded by enemies. If we can't eliminate them, our own existence will be in serious danger.

Once upon a time, the twelve Empyrean Lords taught us Daevas to fight the Balaur. Now the Elyos and the Asmodians train Daevas to fight each other.

The Elyos and the Asmodians blame each other for the Cataclysm, each believing themselves the only true rulers of Atreia.

But neither the Elyos, the Asmodians or the Balaur have ever managed to gain victory. The delicate balance fluctuates constantly.

Who will finally be victorious on this battlefield of survival and hatred?
