- The History of the Dragon Lord Tiamat -

Time draws a veil over all memories, and what is history but the memories of many? Yet what many no longer realise is that Tiamat wasn't a Balaur Lord.

The first five Balaur Lords were Fregion, Meslamtaeda, Ereshkigal, Beritra and Apsu

Apsu and Tiamat differed in many ways.

Tiamat was filled with a thirst for blood, her being filled with hatred and rage. In comparison, Apsu was a cool strategist and a mighty sorcerer, while his openness yielded much sympathy with the Balaur.

Apsu proved himself in battle against the Daevas, illustrating great ability to lead and a wisdom for delegation. With the support of many Balaur, Apsu became the fifth Balaur Lord.

Authority was divided between the five Lords, and Fregion declared their power perfect. Their five-armed star complete, there were to be no more additions after Apsu.

Tiamat only ascended much later, but right from the start she had no chance of becoming a Dragon Lord.

It’s true she possessed exceptional abilities and hugely immense ambition, but none of that did her any good following Fregion’s clarification.

Tiamat lived alone for a long time after her ascension, until one day she joined Apsu’s followers.

To this very day it’s unclear whether Tiamat was after the position of Dragon Lord from the start, and so only joined Apsu for that reason.

What we do know, however, is that Tiamat’s incredible abilities were appreciated by Apsu very early on, and he made Tiamat his right hand.

Back then, Tiamat didn’t show either her terribly short fuse or her tremendous desire to kill. In order to succeed, she hid her true self away and followed her plan with steely determination.

The records of what happened next are scarce, probably intentionally so, and much of the players' motivations must be pieced together through conjecture.

There are indications that Apsu was an extremely proud creature, unwilling to compromise or entertain advice.

Perhaps it was this pride that sowed the fatal frustration among his generals.

What is clear, however, is that as Tiamat's power grew, he built a loyal and secret following.

When his allies were many and strong enough, Tiamat turned against the Dragon Lord Apsu.

Whether it was circumstance, luck, or Tiamat's remarkable strength that prevailed, we cannot say. But when the dust settled, Tiamat stood upon Apsu's corpse and declared himself the Dragon Lord's successor.

Now, once Tiamat had reached this position and enjoyed Apsu’s complete trust, she murdered him in cold blood.

There are many legends about Apsu’s murder. The most commonly told legend says that Tiamat rammed a magic dagger into Apsu’s neck as he slept.

She’s then said to have sliced open Apsu’s chest and removed his heart. It’s said she threw the heart into a volcanic crater that burned for 1,000 years.

Another version of the story says that Tiamat launched an attack on Apsu along with her allies and murdered him.

All of these stories have one thing in common though: Tiamat murdered Apsu from behind. He trusted her unconditionally and she abused that trust from the start.

Tiamat had the guard and all of the brigade generals called to a meeting.

She announced Apsu’s death and declared that she was ready to assume the now free position of Dragon Lord.

Not everyone agreed with that step because some people doubted Tiamat’s version of Apsu’s passing. But with the help of her allies, she had her opponents in the palm of her hand in no time.

The naysayers were quickly cleared out of the way.

Tiamat now had free rein. This turn of events brought with it great confusion and doubt, but Tiamat’s followers were able to use their propaganda to convince the majority of Tiamat’s suitability as the 5th Dragon Lord.

Some clever heads switched sides immediately and those who weren’t fond of Tiamat had to bow to a convinced majority in the end.

Once Tiamat had fully assumed Apsu’s place, she presented the remaining Dragon Lords with a fait accompli.

Not everyone agreed with that step because some people doubted Tiamat’s version of Apsu’s passing. Ereshkigal in particular, the guardian of order and grim avenger, was beside herself with rage. The devious murder committed purely out of a lust for power was an outrage that she could never condone.

These were Ereshkigal’s words. Her judgement spread far and wide and encouraged many to punish Tiamat for her misdeeds.

But all of the protests and rebellions were silenced when Fregion announced that he would accept Tiamat as the fifth Dragon Lord.

Nobody knows why Fregion appointed Tiamat a Dragon Lord. The ill will felt for the devious Tiamat was great and Fregion was taking a clear risk here. It’s assumed that this was intended to avoid any internal weakness in the battle raging at the time.

Fregion made it clear to Tiamat that he would not tolerate any further killings. Whoever felt called to become a Dragon Lord should mobilise their troops and fight fairly in combat.

Following Fregion’s clarification, Tiamat was accepted as a Dragon Lord.

She continued to be held at arm’s length, however, since it was hardly possible to trust her. From that point on, Tiamat charged into battles even more passionately than before.

She was soon recognised as a warrior who thirsted for blood, murder and destruction. The murder of a Dragon Lord clung to Tiamat until the end. This may be one reason why she had to wrestle with such great challenges later on.

Her strongest rivals were Raksha and Stormwing, but even these two couldn’t subdue Tiamat. A challenger wishing to become a Dragon Lord still has to face Tiamat first.
