Preface

This book consists of several texts for Daevas who want to become agents of the Empyrean Lords. They may not always be entirely factual.

Readers are asked to decide for themselves what is true and what is not. The book itself is primarily intended to entertain.

Signed: Harius, Notorious Daeva

Let's assume that you want to become an agent of an Empyrean Lord.

An agent of the Empyrean Lord acts both as one of his Wings and also as an important assistant during various missions.

You must meet certain requirements to rise to this respected and honourable position.

First, you must ascend to become a Daeva.
Then you must obtain recognition from your class preceptor.

Both of these steps are critical.

However, there appear to be other avenues as well.

In theory, it should also be possible for a human to become an agent within the space of one day. But it hasn't happened yet.

The calling to become an agent differs greatly from that to become a commander of Sanctum. It is not sufficient to merely have relevant achievements.

Agents are generally selected from the Lord's Legion. In principle, anybody can become an agent, but they usually give preference to members of the legion.

In the last 600 years, there has only been one agent who wasn't a member of the Lord's Legion .

There aren't any official conditions to fulfil as such, but the following list does seem to show the prerequisites.

First, you must ascend to become a Daeva.
Then you must obtain recognition from your class preceptor.
Moreover, you must be a member of the Lord's Legion.

One could consider these the three unofficial requirements.

So to become an agent, you first need to join the Lord's Legion. This necessitates further steps.

As a first step, you must rise to become a Brigade General in a legion that has at least six members.

Unlike a common soldier, who carries out orders from headquarters without giving them much thought, an agent must be able to understand the Lord's mission and commit to it accordingly.

To achieve that, a Daeva must possess both outstanding skills and relevant practical experience.

Even if you fulfil these requirements, you still need five followers to back you up. You must become the Brigade General of a legion with at least six members, yourself included.

This will demonstrate that you can be trusted and relied upon.

You must also prove that you are a wise and capable Daeva.

As a second step, is to get promoted to Brigade General of a union legion.

Brigade Generals of union legions are more carefully selected.

According to an unofficial study by the Legions Board in Sanctum, there are currently about 10,000 major and minor legions and thus also Brigade Generals. However, there are only 100 Brigade Generals of union legions.

The Brigade General of a common legion has the same freedoms as a mercenary in terms of acting and bearing responsibility. In contrast, the Brigade General of a union legion is sworn to serve his territory and the community residing there. His task is to protect his territory and he is held responsible for it.

Therefore, a Daeva requires recognition from Sanctum to become Brigade General of a union legion.

If this criteria is met, you must wait patiently until one of the incumbent Brigade Generals in the territories resigns or returns to the Aether Flow. It is the only way these posts become available.

Yet even if a post is available, you cannot just apply for it. There's a list of potential Brigade Generals kept under lock and key.

The list of potential Brigade Generals is updated every three years and contains replacements for all current Brigade Generals.

Before your name can appear on this list, you must have become achieved recognition for your support of the respective territory and the community residing there.

In addition, you should have been a Daeva for at least thirty years, have at least five years' experience as a Brigade General of a legion and obtain the required recognition from the Lord's Legion.

If you meet all of these criteria, there is a distinct possibility that your name will be put on the list... then again, maybe not.

After all, you also need a permit from the Empyrean Lord and his Council.

The Brigade General of a union legion then joins battles in the name of the Empyrean Lord. These battles are designed to test the Brigade Generals, and the three most promising to emerge are chosen as candidates.

But that's not all. The results from the battles are sent to the Lord's Council, which evaluates the candidates.

If the Lord's Council does not settle on any of the three candidates, it adds further candidates to the list.

After more battles, three new candidates are selected and tested and the results forwarded to the Council.

If the Council finally settles on one candidate, it sends the name to the Empyrean Lord's agent.

The agent can demand that the entire procedure be repeated.

Therefore, it may take months, and even years, for the post of Brigade General of a union legion to be occupied again, once it has become available.

It is not an understatement to say it takes a lot of luck to get the post when a Brigade General of a union legion resigns or returns to the Aether Flow.

Not only must your name be on the list of prospects being considered, you must be one of the three candidates selected during the battles, receive recognition from the Council and ultimately be accepted by the agent...

Ta-dah! You are now the chosen Brigade General of the union legion.

However, your journey has only just begun. Your path to becoming an agent is long.

As a third step, you must now become part of the Lord's Legion.

It's name is misleading, because although you might think it ranks above the union legions, it doesn't.

Rather, the two legions hold different titles and have different responsibilities. Both are tasked with protecting the territories, but they perform different activities in addition to that.

For example, one of the tasks of the Lord's Legion is to select a new agent.

Only one who has been called upon by the incumbent agent personally may join the Lord's Legion. Sadly, the exact procedure is a secret.

We do know, however, that of the one hundred members of the legion, only eight are Union Legion Brigade Generals.

Let's assume that you mastered the arduous way up here, obtained the agent's approval and were inducted into the Lord's Legion.

Then you only have to wait for one of the incumbent agents to give up their post or to return into the flow of the Aether.

The Empyrean Lord's agents symbolize his wings. As long as they don't leave their posts or return to the flow of Aether, they won't escape their duties and responsibilities.

Since Daevas are immortal, an agent's post is rarely empty.

But should it come to such a tragedy and an agent's post becomes free, you are at least theoretically qualified to replace him.

Then the following process will be set in motion.

When the time has come to select a new agent, the members of the Lord's Legion will be released from their missions. The remaining three agents will take over their missions during this time.

Then, the members of the Lord's Legion will gather in a secluded place. Their only task is to select a new agent.

The exact process varies every time. This is because the Lord as well as the previous agent may have made recommendations for the selection process.

But the usual process is as follows: The members of the Lord's Legion vote four times a day. The future agent must obtain the vote of at least five members.

Before each vote, the members cleanse their bodies as well as their souls and say a prayer to the Lord in the language of ancient Atreia. Then they write the name of their candidate on a clean piece of cloth. These pieces of cloth are then collected in a mysterious box.

Once all the members of the Lord's Legion have cast their votes and the votes have been counted, the pieces of cloth are burned.

If the rising smoke is black, no agent was found and the process will have to be repeated.

Until a new agent is confirmed, these elections take place four times a day. At the end of each week, the members kneel in joint prayer to the Lord. In one case, this process took over three years.

Due to the necessary prerequisites and the potentially long period until a new agent has been selected, a protector is appointed for the Empyrean Lord during the transition.

Of course, this post is only temporary. Once a new agent has been selected, the Protector will be freed from the responsibilities and the associated authority.

Now, assume that you, as a member of the Lord's Legion, have been chosen as a candidate for the agent's post. Then your name was written on the pieces of cloth, and they burned with a cloud of white smoke.

Now you must complete one last step on your quest to obtain an agent's post and choose a new name. You leave your old life as a Daeva behind you and become one of the Lord's servants.

After choosing your new name, you will cleanse your body and your soul once more and kneel in prayer to the Empyrean Lord. Then the time will finally have come! You stand before the Lord as a new agent.

First of all, you must become a Daeva,

obtain recognition from your class preceptor,

become a Brigade General in a legion with at least five members,

then become one of the hundred Brigade Generals of the union legions,

be recruited as one of the eight members of the Lord's Legion,

wait patiently until one of the incumbent Brigade Generals in the territories resigns or returns to the Aether Flow,

and then convince another five members of the Lord's Legion to give you their votes.

That's how you can become one of the Empyrean Lord's Wings!
