Many Daevas have advised me against researching the Balaur.

But I was convinced that this was the right way to protect the providence and justice of Aion. I now feel that my research was not in vain.

When countless Balaur were discovered in the Abyss, it became clear to me that they were not a past to be forgotten, but rather a present to be overcome.

So, you might say that this book is the first book on the research of the Balaur. I have reanalysed all the findings about the Balaur from the time before the Cataclysm and scoured the entire Abyss for clues.

Introduction

The Balaur family includes the slightly degenerate Nagarants and Draconutes, the regular Drakans and more advanced Dragons.

These Dragons, which likely originated from the Drakans, are the five Dragon Lords. However, they are not the subject of this book.

This work deals with the appearance and the characteristics of the Drakans, the Nagarants and the Draconutes.

The thought alone may be frightening, but the existence of an even more advanced Balaur species cannot be excluded. At this point, therefore, I would to expressly recommend that the research into the Balaur continue.

An overview of the Drakans

The Drakans are the ancestors of the Balaur. They were the rulers of ancient Atreia. Five of these ancient Drakans rose to become the Dragon Lords of their time.

The Drakans proved to be astonishingly adaptable, so they were able to settle even in harsh areas that were almost uninhabitable for humans and Sapiens. This allowed them to spread throughout the whole of Atreia.

Furthermore, walking upright allowed them to use tools with both hands. As they were unable to fly, however, they were forced to eke out their existence on the ground. Their skin was thick and as tough as leather, and their mighty tails betrayed their identity from afar.

As a result of the Cataclysm, the Drakans disappeared from the face of Atreia. Accordingly, there was great uproar when they were rediscovered in the Abyss.

To this day, it is believed that they live in unknown numbers somewhere outside the Aetheric Field.

Drakan culture

Unlike their brash character suggests, the Drakans are believed to be mentally highly developed and to have advanced the development of stone architecture.

Unfortunately, however, the majority of Balaur architecture was destroyed during the Thousand Year War and the Cataclysm. Only a few ruins remain today.

The Balaur differ from all other living beings in Atreia in that the power of Aether causes them difficulties.

Not only can the Drakans not use this power, but the Aether even weakens them.

For this reason, they developed powerful weapons and armour using so-called Anti-Aether.

An overview of the Nagarants

These Balaur did not exist in ancient times. They first appeared following the Cataclysm.

A tissue sample examination revealed that they belong to the Drakan family. It is assumed that their sudden and excessive contact with Aether led to this mutation.

Nagarants didn't appear until after the Draconutes: they were first sighted during the Abyss War.

They lived in the Abyss before the Asmodians discovered it, but their actual habitat has remained a mystery until this day.

The Nagarant's upper body is similar to that of a human, while its lower half is like that of a snake. Female Nagarants are called Naga, and the males Nagarants.

Nagarant culture

The Naga can work magic by tapping the ancient power of the Balaur, known as Anti-Aether.

However, researching Anti-Aether comes with lots of difficulties, so no one has thus far been able to understand exactly what kind of magic it is.

To make matters worse, so far neither the habitat nor ruins of the Nagarants have been discovered, so hardly anything is known about their culture.

However, lengthy investigations suggest that the Nagarants are degenerate compared to the Drakans and are more advanced in comparison to the Draconutes.

It has also been observed that they organised and formed groups very quickly following their discover, which is very unsettling.

An overview of the Draconutes

The Draconutes first appeared during the Abyss War and, through their very existence, proved that the Cataclysm had not wiped out the Balaur.

Subsequently, the Nagarants and Drakans have also been rediscovered, meaning the existence of the Balaur could no longer be denied.

Similar to the Nagarants, this Balaur mutation was also caused by the Cataclysm. In comparison to ancient Balaur, the Draconutes are weak and their head movements are slow.

In comparison to their lower halves, their upper bodies are heavily built, which affects their balance and causes a crooked back.

Additionally, they only have a rudimentary and incomplete set of small teeth.

Draconute culture

The Draconutes do not seem to be sufficiently developed to be able to build a distinct culture.

While they practice different professions, it seems they were assigned these jobs by the Nagarants.

Only in terms of reproduction do the Draconutes appear to be superior to the Nagarants as their number exceeds that of the Nagarants.

Although the Draconutes only use old weapons, the armour they use to protect their mighty upper bodies is extremely advanced.
