Volume 2: Gurr

- Introduction -

Gurrs are something different from other Sapiens.

Most of the Sapiens existed before the Epic Cataclysm, but the Gurrs came crawling out of the woodwork after it.

Unlike other Sapiens that spread across Atreia, Gurrs are spotted mainly in Tiamaranta.

So there are many stories and legends about the birth and ecology of Gurrs.

- Birth of Gurrs -

According to the legend, Gurrs were a group of humans that belong to the Balaur.

They refuse to follow the instructions of Aion. They obeyed the Balaurs like their slaves.

Those with dexterity crafted the weapons or armor for the Balaurs, while those with strength built buildings. Others with no particular skills ran errands.

They continued with their petty lives by obeying the Balaurs' orders.

But the Balaurs gradually thought these humans were more of an impediment and less of a help to them.

Humans were too small compared to the Balaurs, so it took a lot of time for them to complete things. They were very weak, as well, so they were easily wounded or killed.

But they just couldn't kill them all. Those humans became the pain in the Balaurs' butt.

One day, a group of humans made a mistake while carrying Dramata's egg. Truth be told, that mistake was not because of humans but because of Drakans, who ordered the job.

But the Drakans were too afraid of punishment. They willfully pointed fingers at the humans. Dramata was so infuriated that he cursed all the humans to turn into Gurrs. Subsequently the Gurrs were driven off from the Balaurs' territory to a damp and dark swamp.

- A Tree in Gurr's Forest -

After being cursed and kicked out to the swamp, it was natural that the Gurrs were crushed with grief. They served the Balaurs to survive, but what they got in the end was to become Gurrs.

Suffering from deep anguish, many Gurrs couldn't live with what they've become and committed suicide. They would walk into hot lava or climb up on a steep cliff to jump off.

There were so many Gurrs killing themselves at that time. Gurr's Swamp was reddened with blood.

One day, there was a little sprout in the puddle.

That sprout grew well probably because it absorbed Gurrs' blood.

It grew very quick. You can even notice its growing height from a couple of steps afar.

It grew to become one big tree. It eventually reached the height of the cliff where the Gurrs jumped to kill themselves.

The Gurrs built a house on the leaves of that giant tree. That tree became the mainstay of their new life.

- An Offering to the Golden Monster -

The Gurrs led a peaceful life, catching Sparky to eat. One day, something weird happened.

The Gurrs that entered inside the cave where lava flows didn't return.

They first thought they may have fallen into the hot lava while following the prey. But the number of Gurrs disappearing kept rising. The chieftain started to worry.

He gathered lots of Gurrs and entered inside the cave with careful steps. But there was nothing inside.

They looked around the cave here and there, and suddenly, they heard a scream! One Gurr approaching the lava was dragged under it.

The other Gurrs were startled. They didn't know what to do and just stood there, blinking their eyes. Out of the blue, a big golden creature showed up from the lava.

The golden monster darted its tongue willy-nilly to catch and eat the Gurrs there. Gurrs shrilled, screamed, and ran away from the cave.

After being discovered, the golden monster would often attack the cave where the Gurrs live.

The chieftain pondered. But there was no way they could repel that golden monster.

He just couldn't come up with a better idea, so he decided to offer a sacrifice to that golden monster.

When he figured the golden monster would be hungry, he sent several Gurrs inside the cave.

Gurrs are terrible with memory. As expected, they would enter the cave without resistance, forgetting what's inside.

That golden monster is still there. Gurrs survive by offering a sacrifice to it.

- The Balaur Follower Who Turned into Cellatu -

There was a very lazy Follower of the Balaur named Lamatz in Avad Village.

Even when others were hunting and working hard, Lamatz would lie down and rest.

The villagers chastised Lamatz to do some work, but it was in one ear and out the other for him.

He lay down all day long. When his wife cooked meals, he would keep still and ate the meal she gave to him.

If the meals came in late, he would yell and even hit his wife.

Lamatz's body gradually changed for he didn't even move his finger and kept eating while lying down. His belly came out like a frog. His limbs became thinner and thinner.

His worried wife urged him to go outside and move around, but he hit his wife and kept yelling instead.

One day, there was a feast in the village. Lamatz went outside the house for the first time in quite a while.

At the feast, he ate as much as he wanted. The villagers hinted at him to stop eating, but he just didn't care.

After the feast, the villagers left. But Lamatz couldn't move because he ate too much. So his wife brought the carriage to take him back home.

However, Lamatz was too heavy for her to carry, so she let go of it accidentally. Lamatz fell off straight down a hill.

Surprised, the wife ran off to the hill, but Lamatz was nowhere to be found.

Lamatz was gone, but there was a very big Cellatu that was sleeping like a baby. Yes, Lamatz turned into that Cellatu.

But his wife didn't realize that. She called up the villagers to find her husband. The villagers couldn't track him down. Instead, they kicked out a Cellatu they came across.

With nowhere else to go, the famished Lamatz wandered off here and there.

But then, he found Gurr's Swamp and settled there.

Lamatz still didn't discard his old habit there. He won't budge an inch and kept standing in one place.

Instead, he would threaten the passing Gurrs like he did with his wife and take their food.
