Volume 5. The Legend of Ereshkigal

- Preface

In ancient Atreia, there occurred many mysterious events that are nearly inconceivable to those living in present day.

It was the Aion Tower that was the source of all those mysteries. The warm, benevolent light of Aion that governed all the world's creations was what enabled the Tower to do whatever it wished.

All creatures living under the bright, beautiful light of Aion were even more capable than they are now, and the Balaur were no exception. It was also thanks to the light of Aion that the Drakan were able to ascend as dragons.

The amazing power of Ereshkigal, the administrator of harsh judgement, also relied on Aion.

Reshanta, the land of Ereshkigal, was under the providence of Aion.

- The Birth of Ereshkigal

One day a group of Drakan discovered a huge transparent egg in the middle of a scorching desert.

They rushed to the egg and were shocked when they touched it; the egg lying on the desert sand shimmering with heat was as cold as ice.

Although it was too cold to touch, the Drakan decided to move it to a safe place to help it hatch. They carefully carried it to their village.

When they laid the egg in a warm place, its surface started to tremble slightly and emit a whirring sound. All Drakan who heard the sound were overwhelmed by a mysterious feeling.

They didn't know why but felt awe arising deep from within them.

From that day, the lives of Drakans started and ended with the egg.

Before starting their day, they visited the egg and listened to its calm ambient energy. After finishing work, they came back to the egg and stared for a long time at the wave-like pattern rising from its surface as transparent as ice.

On the day Ereshkigal finally hatched, all Drakans knew--although they had never been told. Soon, a hero would be born.

At dawn, the Drakan waited in silence for the birth of a new hero. As the whirring sound faded away, the surface of the egg started to crack. A moment later, a gigantic Drakan stood up slowly.

"I will give you order."

These were the first words of Ereshkigal.

- Ascension

Ereshkigal was perfect from birth.

She was incomparable both physically and mentally. On top of that, she could use the power of magic at her will.

All Drakan who witnessed Ereshkigal's amazing abilities knelt down before her. She led the village shortly after her birth and had all neighboring areas under her command.

As she had declared, she established order. She proved the lasting influence of reason to the world where the stronger preyed upon the weak.

Although she accomplished and achieved many things, Ereshkigal felt something was missing. However, she was at a loss as to what that might be.

One day, she heard the news that Fregion had ascended. At that moment, Ereshkigal realized what she had longed for.

More power and unyielding control. She wanted to reach a level no other Drakan had ever reached.

Ereshkigal felt a necessity to look into herself. She knew that she could not go further until she realized the potential within herself.

Ignoring all the Drakan begging her to stay, she left to train herself. She went into a deep cave and began to meditate.

Since she didn't move at all while in the freezing cave, her body temperature dropped little by little. When her entire body froze and even her heart was about to stop, Ereshkigal slowly opened her eyes.

At that moment, bright light suddenly appeared and surrounded Ereshkigal's whole body. A brief moment later when the light disappeared, Ereshkigal looked exactly the same as before and yet completely different.

She evolved into a majestic Dragon from a powerful Drakan. She became a being with infinite potential and could transform into whatever she pleased.

When she emerged from the cave, Ereshkigal inhaled deeply and then breathed out. At the touch of her breath, everything-both living and un-in her presence froze. As if they had been frozen since the beginning of time.

Many Drakan had ascended, but none of them did so through meditation as Ereshkigal did.

It was a fitting ascension for Ereshkigal, the cruel punisher in whose veins, many said, ice circulated.

- Source of Power

After ascending to a dragon, Ereshkigal enjoyed her powers in full.

She brought numerous Drakan and Dragons to her knees and reigned over everything as if she were a god.

Although she conquered more territories and commanded more men, she felt nothing but emptiness.

She had everything she wanted, but she could not ignore the feeling that something was still missing.

The emptiness expanded in her mind, and soon meaninglessness engulfed her.

When nothing but emptiness sat in her mind, Ereshkigal started to look into herself again.

After long self-reflection, Ereshkigal came to a conclusion. What she longed for was not invincible power.

What Ereshkigal wanted was more fundamental.

She was anxious to know everything about the source of the power she had.

Thus she realized the dormant desire that had existed deep down in her heart for a long time.

Now that she had a goal to reach, Ereshkigal abandoned everything once again and left for self-discipline.

Many stories speak of what kind of practice Ereshkigal did to find the source of power.

One says that Ereshkigal, sitting in utter silence in a seemingly endless desert, neither ate nor drank for one hundred days.

Then, Ereshkigal finally found great enlightenment. She stood up quietly and left the desert. It is said that small buds sprouted from the footprints she left behind.

Although it was a barren desert with little rain, the buds sprouting from Ereshkigal's footprints grew well.

And eventually, they formed a forest, changing the barren desert into a fertile land.

Another story says that Ereshkigal came back to the cave where she had first ascended.

She set a small stone in front of her and stared at it for a long time.

Nothing happened at first, but after awhile, the stone started to levitate slowly into the air.

The stone, now in the air, began to make a whirring sound and transformed into a small ice lump.

Shortly after, it became a burning fire and then changed again into a small bird flapping its wings. Lastly, it returned to a stone.

Ereshkigal smiled. That was the day she transformed from a majestic dragon to an omniscient and omnipotent Balaur Lord.
