Introduction

Studying ancient Atreia is very challenging, as the landscape has shifted considerably over the course of time.

Geologically, historical sites are lacking as most ruins and relics were destroyed during the Cataclysm.

Societally, Humans were at the whim of their Balaur masters in ancient times, and have little-to-no recored histroy themselves. Most information found comes from the Balaur perspective.

Player: "Interesting..."

However, Humans were the only known people to resist the Balaur at an early point in their development. Unlike most Sapiens, who had assimilated with the Balaur, humans developed their own society and culture quickly after freeing themselves from the Balaur.

As the Twelve Empyrean Lords appeared and humans started to ascend as Daevas, humans banded together to form a more organized resistance against the Balaur.

The appearance of the Empyrean Lords and Daevas is seen as the definite turning point in history. Consequently, their advent ended the era of Balaur dominance.

Rise of the Balaur

There are no recordings of the beginning of Balaur rule. Nevertheless, it is certain that Drakans, the original form of the Balaur, had ruled long before the ascended Five Balaur Lords appeared.

The Balaur's physical and mental superiority gave them an evolutionary advantage, which they used to subjugate Sapiens and emerge as the ruling race of Atreia.

Sapiens worshipped the Five Balaur Lords as gods, and performed religious ceremonies in their honor. The Altar of Tiamat, an ancient ruin in Altgard, is one of the vestiges of their worship.

Ancient Humans

It is assumed that human civilization had remained at a primitive level until the Twelve Empyrean Lords appeared.

Ancient humans formed small groups and settled along the seas or rivers. They survived through hunting, or forming fishing communities without being able to harness Aether.

The obvious physical inferiority of humans led the Balaur to believe that humans were no threat, but their faith and strong communal ties gave Humans unbreakable resolve.

The Birth of the Twelve Empyrean Lords

The Twelve Empyrean Lords seem to have been born as a response to the rise of the Balaur Lords.

However, it is unknown when and where the Twelve Empyrean Lords appeared.

Many myths and legends about their appearance tell different stories, but they have one thing in common: the Tower of Aion is linked to the Empyrean Lords.

Ascending of Humans

While it is believed that the Empyrean Lords helped the first Daevas ascend, there are no solid records of the event.

Humans now capable of ascending as Daevas gained immense strength, and the ability to control Aether under the guidance of the Empyrean Lords.

With their newfound power, Daevas fought against the Balaur and their minions to free Humanity from the clutches of the Dragon Lords.

Resistance for a Thousand Years, the Millennium War

A War broke out as the Balaur Lords threatened to destroy The Tower of Eternity and cull Humanity from the Atreia.

Aion acted against this threat and created the Aetheric Field to protect the Tower. The Twelve Empyrean Lords, and their Daevas, united to defend the Tower and aligned themselves with Aion.
