Dialogs:

Many Daevas tried to dissuade me when I first told them my desire to research Balaurs.

Nevertheless, I firmly believed that my research would be the way of complying with the providence of Aion and realizing justice, and now my devotion to studying Balaurs seems to be rewarded.

As a great number of Balaurs have been found in the Abyss, Balaurs have become a reality we must deal with, not a past we must forget.

This book would be the first book concerned with the pedigree of Balaurs. I assembled in this book what I interpreted from the Balaur research papers written before the Epic Cataclysm and what I collected and confirmed traveling every corner of the Abyss.

Introduction

The Balaur can be classified into four lines: Drakans which is the first pedigree of Balaur, Dragons which exceed Drakans in their abilities, degenerated Nagarants, and Draconutes.

Dragons, often called Ascended Bodies of Drakan, mean the Five Balaur Lords. For more information about them, please see other references.

This book will focus on the birth and characteristics of Drakans, Nagarants, and Draconutes.

I cannot affirm that there will be no new types of Balaurs other than those listed above, although I do hope that there won't be. Therefore, this book may not be the last document to classify the Balaur pedigree.

Overview of Drakans

Drakans are the first pedigree of Balaur and known to have ruled ancient Atreia. As some of them ascended, the Five Balaur Lords were born.

Drakans adapted themselves well to harsh environment where no humans and Sapiens could survive, and spread to all over Atreia.

They walked straight and used tools with their two arms. But without wings, they mainly lived on the ground. Drakans had thick and tough skin and thick tails. They emitted the Counter-Aether energy.

They were known to have pushed out of Atreia by the Aetheric Field during the Epic Cataclysm, but they have been recently rediscovered in the Abyss.

We can only assume that they nest somewhere out of the Aetheric Field. Their exact numbers and sizes are still unknown.

Drakan Culture

Contrary to their outrageous temper, Drakans had a quite high level of intelligence. Their stone constructions are known to have developed above par.

However, most of the Balaur constructions were destroyed during the Millennium War and the Epic Cataclysm, and now only few of them are left in ruins.

The most notable difference between Balaurs and other creatures of Atreia is that Balaurs are incompatible with the power of Aether.

Drakans are unable to use the power of Aether and vulnerable to Aether.

To overcome such weakness, they have developed strong weapons and armor using a mysterious power called Counter-Aether.

Overview of Nagarants

Nagarants did not exist in the ancient times. They were a new species born during the Epic Cataclysm.

The analysis on their body cells has revealed that Nagarants are one branch of Drakans. They seem to have mutated as exposed to excessive Aether energy in a short time.

Nagarants were first discovered in the Abyss during the Elysean-Asmodian War right after Draconutes had been found.

They had been living in the Abyss before Asmodians discovered the Abyss, but their main habitats are still unknown.

Their upper bodies look like humans while their lower parts look like snakes. They can be distinguished by gender; females are called Nagas, and males are called Nagarants.

Nagarant Culture

Using the Counter-Aether energy unique to Balaurs, Nagarants practice various magical skills including freezing.

However, we have not succeeded yet in revealing the real aspects of Nagarant magic since the research on the power of Counter-Aether have made little progress.

Furthermore, no Nagarant habitats or relics have been found yet. We may need to wait longer to know the social and cultural characteristics of Nagarants.

At least, our long period observations have confirmed that Nagarants are less evolved than Drakans but more evolved than Draconutes.

They may evolve further as they have shown faster progress in division of labor and organization since we first discovered them.

Overview of Draconutes

Draconutes were first discovered in the Abyss during the Elysean-Asmodian War. Their existence proved us that the Balaur did not disappear after the Epic Cataclysm as we had believed.

A little later we also discovered Nagarants and Drakans, solid evidence for the survival of Balaurs.

Like Nagarants, Draconutes were a variation of Balaur mutated by the shock of the Epic Cataclysm. They are weaker and stupider than ancient Balaurs.

Their upper parts are unproportionally developed compared with their slim lower parts. They have little sense of balance and a little crooked shape.

Their jaws and teeth are noticeably weak. They have only a few small teeth.

Draconute Culture

They do not seem to have enough intelligence to develop their own culture.

They show a certain level of labor specialization, but their society does not seem to have developed by their own. It is more likely that Draconute society has been organized by the leadership of Nagarants.

They also seem to be very prolific; their number has increased faster than that of Nagarants since the Epic Cataclysm.

They use old weapons but wear relatively developed upper armor.
